To
gain an understanding of how ADRAD parts can heat and
cool your vehicle,
click the diagram below to view an enlarged version.
There
are two methods of cooling engines, one by liquid the other by
air, in automotive applications the most popular is by liquid.
The diagram shows several circuits within a modern car, engine
cooling / car heating. Air Conditioning, Engine oil cooling and
Charge Air Cooling.
Let us focus mainly on the engine cooling system that comprise of the following
important components, radiator and cap, thermostat, water pump, fan and
coolant.
Heat generated by the car engine is absorbed into the coolant, the water
pump circulates the heated coolant, the thermostat acts as a valve to allow
heated coolant to pass into the radiator.
The radiator itself is a heat exchanger and uses the outside (ambient air)
to cool the heated coolant as it is drawn (by the fan) through the rows
of radiator tubes that are finned to give a greater surface area (increase
cooling capacity).
The coolant now at a lower temperature passes out of the radiator and back
into the engine jacket to commence it's journey once more.
